Hearts That Care Volunteer Health Clinic was started in 1998 as the Great Plains Volunteer Clinic by Dr. Wendy Bartanen. Dr. Bartanen, a graduate of May Medical School, passionately believed that health care was a right and should be accessible to all.
From 2006 to 2020, the clinic operated at 304 SW A Avenue. In 2007, it became a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation and was renamed to Hearts That Care Volunteer Health Clinic, Inc. In May 2020, Hearts that Care Volunteer Health Clinic opened at 1313 West Gore in the former McMahon Medical and Dental Building. In October 2020, the clinic opened its dental clinic.
Because of health issues, Dr. Bartanen retired from active practice of medicine and her directorship was transferred to Dr. Daniel Joyce who shares her passion. Dr. Bartanen passed away in 2017.
The clinic has an in-house pharmacy which provides medications to our patients free of charge.
Both the medical and dental clinics are staffed by volunteers. The medical clinic is open the first and third Thursdays of the month. The dental clinic is open on the third Thursday of the month for extractions, with required screenings and xrays for all dental patients on the Tuesday of that same week. The dental clinic is available, by appointment only, for all current Hearts That Care medical patients and for those who have health-only insurance and meet certain financial requirements. See eligibility requirements here.
In keeping with Dr. Bartenan’s belief that healthcare is a right and should be accessible to all, the clinic now started a Prescription Assistance Program in January 2022, to help individuals who are not our patients with their prescription co-pays. See prescription assistance here.
